Passenger traffic at Sofia Airport rose by an annual 6.0% to 3,125,625 in the first nine months of the year, the airport operator said on Friday.

The number of passengers serviced at the airport’s Terminal 1 rose by an annual 16%, as the increase was due to the launch of direct flights to new destinations, the airport operator said in a press release.

As many as 222,000 people traveled on flights connecting Sofia with London, Sofia Airport added.

Passengers on regular international flights in January-September increased by almost 180,000.

Aircraft movements at Sofia Airport rose by 5.3% year-on-year to 33,767 in January-September.

The airport handled 13,408 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments in January-September, up by an annual 7.5%.

In September alone the airport serviced more than 400,000 passengers, up by 11.3% on the year. Aircraft movements rose by 10.2% to 4,144 in September while the airport handled 1,428 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments, up by an annual 4.3%.
