Sofia Airport Reports Record Passenger Numbers in 2014
Sofia Airport served 3.8 million passengers in 2014, which is an increase of 8.9% compared to the previous year.
The most popular destinations were London, Frankfurt and Vienna, as announced by airport officials.
It was estimated that 93% of the passengers were using international regular flights, 4% were clients of the internal routes and 3% of them were organized tourist groups.
At present the airlines with 60% share of the local market are Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air and Lufthansa, electronic daily Dnevnik reports.
Over the past year 42 120 planes have traveled to and from the airport, which is an increase of 4% as compared to 2013.
A higher number of both international and charter flights can also be observed.
A decrease is visible in business aviation, domestic and transport flights.
In December the number of serviced planes increased with 34% as compared to the same month in 2013.
The traditional charter flights operated by British companies, which transport passengers between cities in the UK and the Bulgarian ski resorts, started on 20 December 2014.
The airports in Varna and Burgas also show an increase in the number of passengers, respectively 5.2% and 2%.
